Home Inventory Tips | The Insurance Center

Making a home inventory – a list of all your belongings in your home – may seem like a challenging task, but it needs to be done! Having a home inventory list can also help you understand how much homeowners insurance you need, as well as let you know whether you need extra insurance coverage.  Every homeowner or renter should have a home inventory list and keep it updated at least yearly.

Here are some things that you’ll want to include about the items on your list.

  • Description of the item
  • Make, model or serial number if applicable
  • Cost at the time of purchase or appraisal
  • Where the item was purchased
  • Date of purchase
  • Receipt or photo of the item
  • Cost to replace the item today
  • Items that are antique or irreplaceable should be discussed with your insurance agent to find out if these items require extra coverage

There are many ways to create a home inventory list. A number of websites can walk you through creating your own list. Most smartphones have home inventory list apps that allow you to create your list right on your phone. If you are a first-time home buyer or renter, this is the perfect time to create a home inventory list. If you have never created a home inventory list, the time to do so is now!
Insurance claims don’t wait until you have the time. Keeping your home inventory list safe is another great tip! Keeping the list outside of your home is your best option, and keeping copies in more than one location can prevent you from having to create another one if one copy is lost or accidentally destroyed.
